Prompt: Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Prompt Response - One of my most unforgettable meals was the school lunch chili from my freshman year. It was a cool day, and the school lunch was a white cylindrical container and a bag of chips I had never seen. I sat down, opened it, and saw it was chili. It was very good and I enjoyed eating it with the chips. Summary - Today in class, we had a test on The Life You Save May Be Your Own. Prompt: Write about a time when you realized you needed to look out for yourself in a silly or harmless situation—maybe dodging a pop quiz, escaping a group chat argument, or remembering at the last second to submit an assignment. How did choosing wisely make your life easier?

Prompt Response - A time I needed to look out for myself was when I remembered at 11:30 that I had an AP Gov assignment due at 11:59. So I had to lock in and complete it before it was due, and ended up finishing it with 2 minutes left. Choosing to do it made my life easier because I didn't have to do it later. Summary - Today in class, we finished reading The Life You Save May Be Your Own and watched a film. Reflection - Today, we analyzed The Life You Save May Be Your Own.

Prompt: Describe a time that you had an encounter with a homeless person, either directly or indirectly. What did you think and how did it make you feel?

Prompt Response - A time I had an encounter was when I was walking home in Argentina and saw a homeless person sitting on the steps at a corner. I had picked up food from Burger King and saw them sitting out in the cold, so I gave them my food and went home. Summary - Today in class, we read The Life You Save May Be Your Own and started a writable assignment. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the first five paragraphs from The Life You Save May Be Your Own.

Prompt: Write about what you are thankful for.

Prompt Response - I'm thankful for my friends, because I enjoy hanging around and talking to them. I also enjoy playing lacrosse and other games with them. Summary - Today in class, we got new vocabulary. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the new vocabulary.

Prompt: The last scene forces readers to reinterpret Emily’s entire life. Write about a moment when new information changed your perception of a person or situation. How did that “plot twist” reshape your understanding, the same way Faulkner’s ending reshapes the story?

Prompt Response - A moment when new information changed my whole understanding of a situation was during a dispute between two of my friends. At first, I didn't know what was going on, and didn't side with anyone because I was uninformed. But later I found out that the reason my friends were in conflict was because my friend's friends jumped the person my other friend was dating in a parking lot. After I learned the truth, the entire situation made a bit more sense why they were in a quarrel. It taught me that you can’t understand a dispute until you know what’s really going on. Summary - Today in class, we had a test on A Rose for Emily. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the test on A Rose for Emily.

Prompt: In “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily’s actions shock the reader—she kills her fiancé and keeps his body in her home for years. People often react with disbelief when they hear about real-life stories that seem just as unbelievable. Write about the most shocking or “craziest” news story you have ever heard. What happened, and why did it stand out to you? How did people react to it, and what does it reveal about human behavior?

Prompt Response - One of the most shocking news stories I ever heard was about Tyre Sampson, a kid who died after falling out of a ride at an amusement park. It stood out to me because amusement parks are supposed to be safe, fun places, and the thought that a kid could lose his life on a ride people trust every day was sad and hard to believe. Many demanded accountability, stricter safety checks, and better training to make sure nothing like this would happen again. The tragedy shows how, with human behavior, people ignore and take things for granted until something goes wrong. Summary - Today in class, we finished reading A Rose for Emily and watched the movie. Reflection - Today, we analyzed A Rose for Emily.

Prompt: Miss Emily’s house once represented pride and tradition, but over time it became a symbol of decay and isolation. Describe a place that holds deep memories for you—positive or negative—and explain how it reflects part of who you are or how you’ve changed over time.

Prompt Response - A place that holds deep memories for me is my elementary school. When I was young, the hallways seemed huge, and every classroom and playground was like a new area discovered. Now, when I look back, the school feels smaller, but the memories I made are still with me. It reflects how I’ve grown because that school was where I first learned how to speak up, try new things, and figure out who I wanted to be. Summary - Today in class, we started reading A Rose for Emily and worked on an assignment. Reflection - Today, we analyzed A Rose for Emily.

Prompt: Think about the vocabulary words from Lesson Two. Write about a time you saw or heard one of these words outside of the classroom — maybe in a movie, song, social media post, or book. Describe how it was used and whether the context helped you understand the word better.

Prompt Response - I first heard the word nomenclature when I was first learning about taxonomy. Our teacher said that it's a system that scientists use to classify creatures. They said that it was used to give each animal a specific scientific name, like Homo sapiens for humans. I learned that taxonomy orders living things into groups, while nomenclature provides the standardized names that make it understandable around the world. Summary - Today in class, we got new vocabulary and did an assignment. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the new vocabulary.

Thinking about “The Rockpile,” which parent or guardian in your life has been the strictest when it comes to discipline? Explain how their approach to discipline has influenced you or shaped your behavior.

Prompt Response - The strictest parent when I was little was my dad. He believed that discipline was needed to teach me responsibility and respect. Whenever I did something wrong, he made sure I understood why it was wrong and what I should do differently next time. Back then, I sometimes thought he was being too harsh, but now I realize his strictness came from wanting me to become a better person. Summary - Today in class, we worked on the Rockpile project. Reflection - Today, we analyzed The Rockpile.

Thinking about "The Rockpile," what is something your parents forbade you from doing when you were growing up? Explain what it was and why they might have set that rule.

Prompt Response - When I was little, my parents forbade me from getting into a stranger’s car. They always told me that even if someone seemed nice or offered me something, it could be dangerous because you never really know a person’s true intentions. At the time, I thought they were just being overly protective, but now I understand they were trying to protect me from harm. Summary - Today in class, we read The Rockpile. Reflection - Today, we discussed The Rockpile.

Words shape how we think, write, and interpret literature. Think about a time when learning a new word or understanding a specific term helped you better analyze a text, express an idea, or make your writing stronger.

Prompt Response - I remember when I first learned the meaning of the word consequence. I used to think it only meant a punishment, but I learned it means the result/outcome of something. Understanding that made me better at analyzing stories and characters because I could see how one event leads to another. This also helped me think more deeply about causes and effects in literature. Summary - Today in class, we got new vocab and did an assignment. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the new vocab.

Reflect on a time when you paused to appreciate the beauty of nature, much like the speaker in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Where were you, what did you notice, and how did that moment of stillness make you feel or change your perspective?

Prompt Response - One day in the fall, I was walking through a park when I decided to stop and watch the leaves fall from the trees. The sunlight shone through the branches, making everything glow an orangeish hue. I felt the breeze blow past me. That time, I felt peaceful and grateful, as if time had slowed down. Summary - Today in class, we read two more poems and started a one-pager project. Reflection - Today, we analyzed two poems we read.

Prompt: In the poem, the speaker and his neighbor meet each year to repair a wall. Describe a time when you had to set or respect a boundary with a friend, family member, or classmate. How did it help or hurt your connection with that person?

Prompt Response - Last year, I had set a boundary with a friend who asked to copy my work. At first, I didn’t say no because I didn’t want to hurt their feelings, but it started to make me feel uneasy. When I finally told them I couldn’t share my work anymore, they were upset at first, and things were tense between us for a while, but it eventually was fine. Summary - Today in class, we had a CommonLit to work on. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the CommonLit assignment and answered questions.

Prompt: Both poems by Robert Frost explore the passage of time and life’s changing moments. Write about a time when something in your life changed more quickly than you expected. How does this experience connect to Frost’s idea that “Nothing gold can stay”?

Prompt Response - When I was little, my best friend moved, and the change happened much faster than I expected. One day, we were spending every afternoon together, and the next, their house was empty. It surprised me how quickly something could end. Summary - Today in class, we read two poems and got a worksheet. Reflection - Today, we analyzed the two poems we read.
